BMWs, Airstrips, and Kilowatts, Oh My! What's your favorite BMW?

Sep 26, 2014,18:53 PM

PuristSPro moderator Patrick_y gets a quick look and test drive of some BMWs on the airstrip and in the real world.

I have a thing for cars.  And especially German cars.  And BMWs are one of my personal favorites.  I like BMWs so much, that I actually own and drive one on a regular basis.

It's amazing what BMWs can do.  They drive so incredibly well on twisty and windy mountain roads that I sometimes think (here come the letters from my readers) I wouldn't need a Porsche, the BMW 3-series handles so well and so subliminally that it's simply not necessary to have a Porsche.  Plus, BMWs are usually significantly larger than Porsches, so they're more practical and safer in every day usage and shopping runs.  Yes, a BMW fulfills my wants and my needs.  But why do I still want a Porsche?  I guess that's a deep conversation that I should probably have with a psychiatrist or other professional help.

BMW has always been my favorite manufacturer.

Just not sure why I have not owned one since 2007 although my favorite was my 1994 850Ci. JerryW

How do you like the BMW i8?

 By: patrick_y : September 27th, 2014-11:48
Would an i8 look good in your garage? It'd be very green.

I will wait a while before I decide if I like Hybrids.

For now I want 8, 10 or 12 cylinders pumping out a great sound. A few garage updates are on the way, should be interesting. JerryW

My wife and I had 7 BMW's (1, 3 and 5 series often with 6cyl engines)... So suppose we like them ;-) The most fun was a 130i. Always have loved their ride compared to the other cars in the segment. Having said that, never owned a BMW M. Although I think t...

Keep in mind, when the designers build these things; the design of certain BMWs have aged well though. My favorite, the E39 5-series has aged fairly well. I still like it when I see it on the road. In fact, I wouldn't mind owning a 2002-2003 530i in perfe...

interesting question about the E92

 By: dedestexhes : September 27th, 2014-12:11
Btw, I love the sound of that engine, getting to a kind of metalic tone... I think the design is nice, the problem is just that as soon as the new model is there, obviously the price collapses, which is not as such a problem. However, that attracks a kind...

Underworld car... Hmm... I still love the E92 M3. And would love to own one. You mentioned you and your wife like the 6-cylinder BMWs. Would this be your first V8?

Yes it would be

We have also the DB7 Vantage, a 12 cyl. So it would be nice to add an 8 cyl high reving engine. But then again, as stated in a previous thread, also thinking about th Porsche 997 GT3. Disadvantage being the fact that it is limited for daily use, 2 childre...

All of the PuristSPro members whom come to mind have two children who have the C63 and the M3 seem to make it work quite well with their families. They're all exciting cars.

I love the 6 Coupé a lot. Sadly, too big for my parking.

 By: amanico : September 26th, 2014-23:49
But the line is awesome, and I am convinced that the engines are top. The new 4 series is very intersting and pleases me a lot. The line of the body is even more balanced than the 3, in my opinion. But would the engine of the M4 be as exciting as the M3??...

The M4 engine isn't as exciting as the M3!

 By: patrick_y : September 27th, 2014-12:09
Starting with the 650i. That was a very luxurious car, felt much more like a BMW 7 series than a BMW 5 series. Even though I think it has a 5 series chassis. The quietness, the smoothness of the suspension (it felt more like an air suspension), and the lu...

The former E46 6-cylinder M3 is a nice car to drive. I really liked the steering on that car and the handling. That one has an even more metallic sound in the exhaust. The only issue I have with the E46 is the seating position is a bit too far to the outs...

Still, I prefer the manual gear box of the BMW.... If I am not wrong, the C 63 only comes with an automatic gear box, doesn't it? Best, Nicolas

Correct.

No C63 for you, since you prefer a manual. Try the E92 M3 V8 with the DCT Double-clutch transmission. That thing is FANTASTIC! I love that gearbox. No clutch pedal, but all the control, all the engagement, and ... what can I say... It's perfect! Did I men...

For me, the Porsche Macan is a perfect size; I don't need the size of the huge X5 (unless I am taking passengers all the time) so the X3 or the Porsche Macan or the Audi SQ5 would be a great size for me. In America, it is becoming more and more of a neces...

Right now, the 4 door BMW M6 Grand Coupe

Is there only a 4 doors Grand Coupé, or does a 2 doors version exist?

For me, a coupé with 4 doors is a blasphemy. ;) Best, Nicolas

but BMW calls the 4 door version the Gran Coupe. - AT

Logical. 4 Doors = Grand Coupé. 2 Doors = Coupé.

Still in a purist way, I Wonder how they can call a 4 doors car a coupé... ;) Best, Nicolas

Mercedes calls their CLS a 4 door coupe too :)

 By: AnthonyTsai : September 28th, 2014-14:18
So BMW isn't the only one. Nowadays, coupe is just basically referring to the shape of the car instead of only being a 2-door only term. Brands are slowly twisting the definition around :) - AT

Yes, a twist of the definition. +1.

 By: BDLJ : September 29th, 2014-20:45
...otherwise, we'd call a 1954 Beetle a coupe, no? The whole concept is muddied and was never particularly clear in the first instance. For a long time, it has just been used to describe 2-door with ‘sporty’ lines. Which could be interpreted as just as mu...

The 6 series grand coupe is cool...

 By: patrick_y : September 29th, 2014-02:36
That rear seat is kind of weird. And what's weirder is the roof. The roof doesn't open, but it does tilt to vent. Also, no grab handles on the ceiling. But that M6 looks nice! I'd like mine in Singapore Grey. I really like the deep recess in the front bum...
