Celebrating Porsche Classic

Jun 19, 2012,01:04 AM

This year again, the Porsche Club Méditerrannée and Porsche Club 914 gathered more than 150 classic cars in the South of France:

We left the Chateau de Lourmarin and drove 60 kilometers through the most beautiful spots of the Parc Régional du Luberon : Bonnieux, Saignon, Cereste, Vitrolles, Ansouis,…

Here’s Bonnieux, one of the most beautiful villages of Luberon :

The trip ended in Ansouis: the parc of the Château is the perfect place to admire all these beauties  lined up perfectly. There were cars just all over the place, I could not take a decent picture of each one of them….so I had to make choices…

Of course, I had to wear a 1970 driver chronograph to match the cars…what about a Heuer Autavia “Jo Siffert” ?

Remember that Siffert was wearing this model (the automatic variation in fact) on a daily basis and was also a big fan of 911’s….that is the reason I wanted to wear this particular watch during the event.

But back to cars….and what about a line up of 356’s ?

The Porsche 356 was the company's first production automobile. It was a lightweight and nimble-handling rear-engine rear-wheel-drive 2-door sports car available in hardtop coupe and open configurations. Design innovations continued during the years of manufacture, contributing to its motorsports success and popularity from 1948 to 1965.

Have a look to admire some amazing examples of this Porsche masterpiece:

Of course there were also bunches of 911’s and all variations were represented. The 911 was introduced in 1963 with a distinctive design and with independent rear suspension , an evolution of the swing axle on the Porsche 356 .

It is always surprising to rediscover some original colors that were used by Porsche in these days….when you think that now most of their cars are grey or black…

I have tried to capture some details of these cars, either an original element of design or a piece of deco added by the current owner…

Of course one cannot forget the 914, the mid-engined , targa-topped two-seat roadster designed, manufactured and marketed collaboratively by Volkswagen and Porsche from 1969 to 1976. Again, a lot of great cars and spectacular colors were represented last Sunday !

And here’s the icing on the cake, my favourite car of the day….an all original and unrestored 904 !

The 904 was produced  in 1964 and 1965. It was officially called Porsche Carrera GTS and debuted late in 1963, for the 1964 racing season. The street-legal version debuted in 1964 in order to comply with Group 3 Appendix homologation regulations requiring a certain number of road-going variants be sold by the factory. The 904 marked the beginning of a series of sportscars that culminated in the mighty 917 .

I have been told that this example had been purchased in Japan and that the previous owner was the president of Yokohama…in any case, it’ a gorgeous race car !

...and as you mentioned, nice to see all the old colors. You rarely see the yellow anymore although my area has so many vintage Porsches. That 904 is pretty sweet.

a brilliant day must have been had by all.

I do remember r this classics well. I had the pleasure of a 928s in 81 and the 930 in 82. I kept the 930 in mint condition with 11000 km until 2000 we a friend of mine sent it to car heaven. Frame damage to the car nothing to him. For me it was pretty sad...

Looks like a lot of fun, happy motoring out there! -MW

The engine of the Carrera GTS was the stuff of legend . . .

 By: Dr No : June 22nd, 2012-03:54
. . . with dual cams per side, hemispherical combustion chamber heads, roller bearing crankshaft, and dry sump lubrication. These were literally race cars for the street. Great outing, Jeff. Wish I was there!

Legend, indeed...

The Fuhrmann four cam is certainly in a class of it's own. And there are only a few true experts left that can properly rebuild and tune them. They're not an engine for the average shade-tree mechanic...but I'd still love to have one in my 356. Emil

wonderful pics and text, Dr Strong, thank you very much!

like the AP Royal Oak, it's taken me decades to come around to appreciating Porsches. your report has only helped to strengthen that appreciation, thanks! TM
