Alpine A 110 Legende : 4th stage of improvements.

Feb 15, 2024,16:23 PM

The third stage was dedicated to power, torque, mainly. Now I have to focus on the brakes, as the car is too powerful for the small discs I have. A real pain on tracks.

The original discs on my car are 296 mm big. For a 252 HP and a 1128 kilos car, it was enough. But now, with such a torque and HP increase ( 375 NM / 302 HP ), I had to find another solution.

I chose AP Racing discs with grooves, on an aluminium bowl, in a diameter of 330 mm for the front and the rear, Ferodo 2500 brake pads, special brake hoses and liquid.

The  main advantages? The brakes are more powerful, resistant, and... Much lighter, with a gain of 7 kilos compared to the " simple " small original brakes which came without a bowl. 7 kilos, that's quite consequent as we are talking of non suspended weight. Added to the gain of 8 kilos due to  the rims, that makes 15 kilos of non suspended weight!

The original brakes:

And now, the new ones:

Before:

After:

I took the opportunity to change the plastic air intake on the right rear window for a carbon one, as the one on the left, dedicated to the dynamic admission, was already changed. No gain, other than aesthetics.

Left:

Right:

The third improvement is discreet as I found two carbon air intakes to be installed on the flat bottom, to cool the engine and the gearbox. Because everything you can do to cool the engine and the gearbox is a good idea, especially with the Alpine. I already changed the intercooler and inverted the ventilators. I will end with a new radiator, next year, when its development is over AND if it really brings something...

The fourth improvement: A rear carbon spoiler, to get some aerodynamic support at high speed. There are better solutions, but less discreet, so it was a matter of compromises. And the chromatic combination works and the car is more stable at high speed.

Here on the GT4 and the Rallye, which associates a small and a big one:

On mine:

Another change, the air intakes on the front of the car, in front of the wheels. I had them painted in the color of the body, as they looked cheap before.

Before:

After:

Like on the Rallye:

Another important change, not really for the car, but for me: I removed the resonator and its hose. I don't need a mechanical resonator, I have way enough noise in the car with the engine screaming high and loud and I gained some weight ( 300 to 400 grams ), plus a bit more HP and torque, too..

Before:

After:

Last but not least, I also found  a new and better fuel pump, with a bigger flow, and more reliable than the original one, from Walbro Motorsport. And, while I was at it, I gave my car a ceramic treatment.

The Fuel Pump:

So you got my idea.. The most useful, spectacular and mandatory change / improvement is about the brakes. Now the whole chassis, brakes and engine are much more in adequate condition. It was about time!

I can now speed without fear. With the exception of wet roads as you'd better be light on the accelerator. wink

Next steps:  Most probably a front spoiler, in carbon. Larger tires will come, with new and lighter rims. I am also thinking of a more elaborated suspension, but that will be for later.

Best,

Nicolas

she / he (?) looks way better now and the brakes, well that was a must after your upgrades... (and I am glad that the 4C had already been equipped with the most relevant design features so I didn't have to bother too much)

An amazing "different" car.

Still beautiful, in my opinion, but, I would not embellish her too much in the future, the external parts, I mean! And be careful!

Bien!

Oooooh, me likeeeeeee.

Love the 2500 pads, used them in the tracked Ferrari 308GTS. If i may ask, what differential does she have?

Please accept my apologies. Mistress Heather, who can read minds, is not here.

So, well, you know, i can't read your mind. What diff does it have now? Open, LSD, ????

Welcome to the carbon rear spoiler club! ;-)

Car looks great, Nicolas. I did prefer the black brake intakes on the front... are they available in carbon fiber too?

It looks excellent.

I will try my best. ;)

Very nice! But what about homologation ?

 By: sebks : February 15th, 2024-18:29
If I’m not wrong any improvement of the car performance (engine, brakes, etc…) is unfortunately considered illegal on French roads… not too concerned by the potential loss of insurance coverage in case of accident? Or did you find a way around it?

Man, I would love a ride in your car!

So very cool. I love that YOU love it so much!

Merci beaucoup, mon ami.

The 'standard ' A110 is already a fabulous car to drive ... these upgrades make it probably bonkers to drive. Maybe it's best for me I can't afford a beauty like this PS. I also mounted the Ferodo 2500 on the Clio (OEM discs) , quite the difference I envi...

Wow great upgrades, looks amazing.

Great updates! I wonder which rims are suppposed to be bigger AND lighter than your OZ Ultraleggeras? 🤔

ahhh then I get it 👍

It's significant!

That’s a lot of good stuff you’re doing.

I’m sure it’s a blast to drive. I know I’d enjoy taking it for a spin 😁

A rocket. Really violent.

Nicolas that is a cool car

Gorgeous car! Love the look of those brakes, and I'd bet the function is improved as much as the looks. View of the back is also superb. So good I'm not sure about adding a huge wing

unless you plan on tracking it or spending a lot of time on the autobahn. Also that's a very cool (and stealthy) color! Hey Renault! If Fiat and Alfa Romeo could manage returning to the US YOU CAN TOO! ;-)

Very extensive modifications

I had gone down the rabbit hole with my previous car too and was so happy I kept it for 10yrs and only sold it because I wanted a different body type and had no space in the garage. PS: a local shop who tracks a110 made one off strut mounts for higher rig...

Looking good!

From 252Ps/320Nm to 302Ps/375Nm is sensible and manageable. So the original calipers can work with the bigger rotors? Reading your project update, it brings back good memories on the mod done to my golf gti 7-8 years ago. It was kind of like my own weeken...

Formidable!

Looks like you’re making some great mods there. Beware Les Gendarmes!

Beautiful car!

Great mods too, both meaningful and tasteful (I hope this does make sense in English )! My favorite modification is the removal of the resonator, very in line with who you are (I think I can say it even if we don't know each other personally). Possibly th...

Great improvements done for your car. By the way, were you able to get all parts without any delay from stock? The car looks fabulous and it surely brings smile on your face while driving by it.

It is good to have earlier experience
